If you just looking for a little rustic look, sand all over so the paint will adhere. Paint, and when dry, sand in places that would normally get wear, such as the edges.

You can paint two colors-such a black and then white on top. Sand when dry for an even more rustic look.
Have fun. By the way, it can be addicting.

I tried to white wash some pine furniture that I had, so I bought a container of white stain. Didn’t work. So, I tried some experimenting. I looked around the garage and found an old can of white latex paint. I stirred it up really good and poured some into an empty coffee can (about a cup). Then I got another cup of water, and just mixed it up really good. I grabbed a (clean) wrag out of the bag and started to wipe it on. I left it on for just about 30 seconds and then wiped it off. Presto…the look I was looking for. I added a couple coats of satin poly on top & it turned out really well.
Here’s a pic of a bed that I made that I did the same finish treatment to…

Yeah. It is pretty easy. Assuming it is bare wood, if not you will need to sand it first. Probably the easiest way it to get Pickling Stain. I couldn’t find it at Lowe’s…but HD had it. It is about $10.00 a quart. It is water based so clean up is easy. You just stain the table. Apply a light coat, let it dry. If it is not dark enough for your taste apply another coat(or more) until it is the way you like it. After that you can apply a coat or two of Polycrlic, if you want it shiny. That is about $40.00 a gallon. You don’t have to apply the Polycrlic if you don’t want to. I just like the way it looks. That is water based also. Both products are made by Minwax. The other way to white wash is to get some white paint and start adding water to it. I’ve found 4 parts water to one part paint does a pretty decent job. If all you are going to stain is a coffee table I would just buy the already mixed stuff.
