Question by bumpkin: I need more answers to my previous question regarding white furniture redo.?
I need to know what kind of materials to purchase so that I can redo the white furniture in the color closest to my bamboo furniture pieces in the same room. I’ve never reworked furniture before so if someone(s) can spell it out and not take it for granted that I’ve done this before and offer some suggestions. Thanks.

First you have to degloss it with a product like Paseo. If you intend to paint it using a faux bamboo finish, you will need to use a stain blocking primer, like Zinsser. This will help the paint adhere better. I prefer to roll on the primer with the little sponge rollers for a smoother finish and so that I don’t have to sand or steel wool brush marks. Most bamboo is in the sienna family of colors with a burnt umber wash. Experiment with the colors on a piece of matte board or extra piece of wood until you get a match. Personally, I would use a glaze to give you more open time to manipulate the paint. You can make your own using 1/3 acrylic or latex paint, 1/3 floetrol (available in the home improvement stores on the paint/stain aisle) and up to 1/3 water. Mix the paints in separate containers. (The burnt sienna as the base coat in one and the burnt umber in another) Here you have some choices, you can roll on the base color and rag on the burnt umber over it once it is dried to get the bamboo coloration. Or you can brush on the base and the burnt umber. Again, practice on a sample will give you an idea of which to do depending on what you are trying to match. In any case, seal your work with a non-yellowing, UVB/UVA protecting polyurethane to both protect the finish and make it easier to clean.

If I’m understanding the question correctly, you are looking to repaint your white furniture, so it will be the same color as your bamboo furniture? I would suggest you buy latex primer first at your paint store and apply that with a paintbrush. But first, remove any hardware if your furniture has any (drawer pulls or knobs). Next, do you have a small piece of your bamboo furniture or something else that you can take with you to the paint store to get paint, that matches exactly to your bamboo? Color swatches at the paint store won’t get you to the exact shade you want. You need to bring the item in. Or maybe you have a pillow sitting on your bamboo furniture that matches it perfectly? Once, you have the right color of paint you can apply it to your primed furniture. The color will change slightly once it has dried, so don’t panic if it doesn’t quite look right when you start. I hope this was helpful for you. I wish you good luck in your project.
